Misunderstood Song Lyrics

In order to make this Friday fun I thought I'd blog about songs that we thought we knew the lyrics to. That is, until (after singing them loudly perhaps for years) we found out we didn't. So, here are a few misunderstood song lyrics that I found on the internet and from personal experience.

Jimi Hendrix's Purple Haze is a classic misheard lyric, "Scuse me while I kiss this guy"
Real lyrics, "Scuse me while I kiss the sky"

Carly Simon's Your So Vain, "I had some dreams there were clowns in my coffee"
Real lyrics, "I had some dreams they were clouds in my coffee"

Credence Clearwater Revival's Bad Moon Rising, "There's a bathroom on the right"
Real lyrics, "There's a bad moon on the rise"

Bon Jovi's Livin' on a Prayer, "It doesn't make a difference if we're naked or not"
Real lyrics, "It doesn't make a difference if we make it or not"
Greenday's Time of Your Life, "Another turnip boy, a Ford stuck in the road"
Real lyrics, "Another turning point a fork stuck in the road"

Outkast's Hey Ya, "Shake it like a polar bear ninja"
Real lyrics, "Shake it like a Polaroid picture"
And my personal favorite, Cheap Trick's The Dream Police, "The dream police they come to pee in my bed"
Real lyrics, "The dream police they come to me in my bed"

There are many more that could be included, but those are some of my favorites. To find more of your favorite misunderstood lyrics you can look at

  3. I love the polar bear ninja! Do you remember the Foreigner song "Emergency". My aunt thought they were saying "Surgeon....Emergency, surgeon, surgeon, surgeon"

  5. I have a sister, and when I was little Bryan Adams had a song out called "I'm going to run to you." For some reason my sister (3 years older than me) thought he was saying "I'm going to ratchy you." So, I sang that too.

For years I misunderstood the lyrics to Elton John's "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting." I thought he was singing "we've had it when your deaths are planned" — what he was actually saying was "we've had it with your discipline." Oi.
